Warren Township School Police

The Warren Township School Police Department is focused on providing a secure and safe learning environment inside and outside of the school for all students and staff. As a school-based police department, we promote the importance of developing positive relationships with students and the community through outreach programs, such as Read with a Cop, Police Cadet Camp, the Women In Power program, as well as student-focused safety programs such as bullying and cyber safety.

VISITORS

MSD Warren Township welcomes family volunteerism, assistance in the classroom, and observation of your child in the instructional setting.

• During the course of the school day, all perimeter doors are locked.

• All visitors, personnel, and late students must enter through the main door of the building and are subject to an identification and security check.

• All visitors are required to check in using our visitor management system.

If you need to speak with a teacher regarding your child’s progress, homework, behavior, or other matters, please call to make an appointment. The teacher will not be able to hold conversations/conferences during instructional time. Parents must request a classroom visit with the building principal with at least 24-hour notice. Visitor policies are subject to change due to District-wide health and safety protocols.

Raptor is an internet-based program that allows schools to take the driver’s license of individuals, scan them through a reader, and automatically log the visitor’s name, address, and partial driver’s license number into a visitor database. Once the visitor is approved, Raptor will print a visitor name tag with the name, photo, time, and destination for the visit.

As Raptor logs and builds the database and the identification badge, Raptor searches all registered sex offenders databases in 50 states and will return with any potential matching offenders along with a picture of the registered sex offender, if it is available. This search is done by name and date of birth only, so it may give a potential match of an individual with the same name and date of birth but may not be the same individual visiting the school.

Driver’s license information is compared to a database consisting of registered sex offenders from all 50 states. If a match is found, campus administrators and law enforcement personnel can take appropriate steps to keep the campus safe.

Any visitor to the building will need to be scanned, a badge printed and worn by each visitor. Example visitors include parents for conferences, outside vendors, classroom visits, etc.

Any state/government-issued identification card will be accepted (Ex. driver's license, BMV identification card, passport, military ID).

Raptor is only scanning the visitor’s name, date of birth, partial license number, and photo for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. Additional visitor data will not be gathered and no data will be shared with any outside company or organization.

A school administrator can question the individual and explain the process to them. The administrator, based on the knowledge of the person and situation, can make a determination to allow entry or refuse access to the facility and/or a student, or at the administrator’s discretion, the student and visitor can meet in the office.

A visitor has been identified as a possible match on the sexual offender database for all 50 states or on the MCS database. The custom MCS database is similar to the sex offender alert except the matching criteria may only include first name, last name, and date of birth. A custom alert may include custody issues, banned visitors, restraining order, etc. 

Office staff will notify the principal that visitor has been denied visitor access via Raptor. The administrator may be reached via a Private Alert or through an Emergency Button in Raptor or any other safe mode of communication.

The principal or designee will review the identification of the potential match and verify via picture on ID and picture in Raptor database. If a match is confirmed, or a potential match remains a concern, the principal will communicate with visitor and confer with Warren Police for additional information regarding the issue. The administrator is asked to assist where there is a potential concern to protect the privacy of visitors. At any time you feel unsafe contact Warren Police. If it is an emergency, contact 911..

Traffic

Warren Township School Police direct bus traffic, student drop-off during morning arrival, afternoon dismissal, and athletics and special events. In addition, Warren Township School Police monitors all bus radio communication. Buses are monitored and equipped with video recording equipment and GPS tracking.

School Safety Drills

Warren Township School Police conduct school safety drills throughout the school year. The purpose of practice drills is to ensure students and staff are prepared to quickly make their way to safety in an emergency situation.

Secure or Lock-down Drills secure school buildings and grounds during incidents that pose the highest level of threat in or around the school building. Students and staff are instructed to clear hallways, lock doors and take positions out of sight until law enforcement can arrive. The participation of local law enforcement agencies in the drills, while not required by state law, is encouraged to help students and staff practice interacting with and being released from lock-down by uniformed officers.

A fire drill is a type of evacuation drill. Warren Township Schools work with our Warren School Police Department and Warren Transportation to practice safely evacuating campuses and school buses in the event of an emergency situation.

When schools are practicing a planned lockdown during school hours, communication to our visiting community members will occur by placing a sign on the door of the school. If a true safety concern arises and a school is placed on lockdown, parents will be notified.

MSD of Warren Township requires that any staff person or volunteer who has reason to believe that a child is the victim of child abuse or neglect report that suspicion immediately to the child abuse hotline (800)800-5556.

Emergency Communications

During an emergency situation, MSD Warren may use the following channels to communicate with stakeholders:

• Social Media/Website posting(s) - Includes school digital newsletters

• Parent Square / E-mail message(s)

• Recorded telephone message(s)

• Media Communication (radio and/or television announcements)

1. Be sure emergency contact information is current and correct. Contact the school secretary immediately whenever your work, home, or cell number changes.

2. Keep the school nurse informed of any medical conditions or physical limitations your child may have or medications your child may be taking.

3. Identify who is authorized to pick up your child if you are not able to respond. Make sure their contact information is current and correct. Please understand that your child will only be released to parents and persons identified on the emergency contact list. The person listed must provide picture identification when picking up your student. Discuss this information with your child, so they know exactly who will pick them up if it is not you.

4. Make sure your child knows the name, address, and phone numbers of parents/caregivers. If there is only one parent/caregiver, your child should have contact information for a second responsible adult on file with your school.

Bullying

The definition of bullying is defined as overt, unwanted, repeated acts or gestures, including verbal or written communications or images transmitted in any manner (including digitally or electronically); physical acts committed; aggression; or any other behaviors committed by a student or group of students against another student with the intent to harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate, or harm the targeted student, creating for the targeted student an objectively hostile school environment that:

• Places the targeted student in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person or property

• Has a substantially detrimental effect on the targeted student's physical or mental health

• Has the effect of substantially interfering with the targeted student's academic performance

or

• Has the effect of substantially interfering with the targeted student's ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the school

Anyone who believes that a student has possibly been or is the victim of bullying is encouraged to immediately report the situation to an appropriate staff member.
